How Skip Hire Works

Here’s a ten-step plan of action:how-skip-hire-works

  1. Decide the size of skip you’ll need and for how long you’re going to need to hire the skip.
  2. Find – and then contact – a reputable, professional skip hire company.
  3. Tell them what sort of skip you need.
  4. Provide the delivery address.
  5. Agree the hiring period timescale.
  6. If all or part of your skip is to be placed on a public highway - a road, pavement or verge – you must also contact your local authority to get a skip permit. However, some waste specialist companies that offer cheap skip hire – such as Waste King – will organise this skip permit for you.
  7. Most reputable skip hire companies can take your credit card details when you order. You may wish to be wary of those firms that insist on ‘cash on delivery’.
  8. You may not have to be at the premises when your skip is delivered but you may wish to oversee the process. Since skip lorries are large vehicles, they need enough space in which to operate. You may want to ensure that no part of the process impedes your neighbours or the general public.
  9. If you didn’t agree a collection date when you ordered the skip, then you need to contact the skip hire company once the skip is full – and that means that the waste is level with the top of the skip, not above it. Most skip hire companies will collect your skip as soon as they can. Generally, this happens on the day following your removal request.

Of course, you’ll need to find a reputable, professional skip hire company.

By law, anyone who collects and disposes of waste must be licensed by the Environment Agency in England and Wales or, in Scotland, by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Waste carriers are licensed in order to prevent ‘fly-tipping’ (dumping waste in an unauthorised place). Indeed, if you hire a skip from an unlicensed firm which then fly-tips your waste, you may be prosecuted – and face a fine or even a prison sentence.

You should:

  • Find out if the skip hire firm you want to use is an approved waste carrier by asking to see the firm’s waste carrier’s certificate or ask for its unique waste carrier number (then contact the Environment Agency - on 03708 506506 - and check that the waste carrier number you’ve been given is legitimate).
  •  Check whether the skip hire company is a member of the National Skip Hire Association (NHSA). This trade body for the skip hire industry aims to promote ethical and responsible business practice among its members. NSHA members agree to abide by the association’s professional code of conduct.
  •  Find a local, approved waste carrier via:
  1. The Environment Agency’online public register of waste carriers
  2. Your local authority’s website, which should contain a list of all local approved waste carriers.

You’ll certainly find Waste King on the Environment Agency’s online public register of waste carriers. We can give you advice and guidance so that you can get the most reliable, efficient and cost-effective service when it comes to collecting and disposing of all waste. So, contact us on:
